即興演奏練習Jazz Exercise - 根音走位 ) 之後的下一步. 在普通情況下, 3rd 和7th 是斷定一個chord 的色調(color) 的最重要的兩個音. 舉一個例子, 如果是major 3rd 加 major 7th 就是一個Maj7 chord, 可是major 3rd 加 minor 7th 就是一個V7 (dominant 7th) chord. 熟悉這些color tones 可以加強我們對一套chord changes 的感覺.
和根音走位的練習一樣, 每個chord 只奏出一個3rd 或者是7th. 光憑記憶不要看譜, 直到能輕鬆的不斷重複也不會出錯為止. 目的是要在還沒有熟練之前給腦部一個練習運算能力的機會, 而不是單純的練熟一組音的走位. Video 裡面的chord changes 是鋼琴名家Bill Evans 的<<Very Early>>. 可以在這裡下載:

This is the next step after you have familiarized with the root movement of a tune (see
即興演奏練習Jazz Exercise - 根音走位 (Root Movement) ). Typically, the 3rd and 7th are the two most important notes that define the color of a chord. For example, a major 3rd plus a major 7th gives a Maj7 chord, but a major 3rd plus a minor 7th is a V7 (dominant 7th) chord. Being familiar with those two notes can help us improve the feel towards a set of chord changes.
Same as the root movement exercise, play only the 3rd or the 7th of each chord. Be sure to play from memory, until it can be repeated at ease for many times without error. The point is not to get used to playing a certain sequence of notes, but to give the brain a chance to exercise before the sequence has been familiarized.
